Recommended Scrunchie Measurements:

XL Scrunchie - 40” x 6.5”
Regular Scrunchie - 30” x 4”
Mini Scrunchie - 25” x 2.5”

Elastic measurement is personal preference, however, I recommend starting with 8” of either 1/4” or 1/2” elastic to start and seeing how that works for you.

Let’s get making!

1. Cut Your Fabric & Elastic

  • Decide which size scrunchie you would like to make and cut your fabric to those measurements. For this example I have cut my fabric to be 40” x 6.5”.
  • Cut your elastic.

2. Create A Loop

  • Place the fabric together with the pretty sides facing and align the short edges.

  • Clip or pin to hold it in place.

  • Using a regular straight stitch and a 1/4” seam allowance sew down the short edges. Backstitch at the beginning and the end.

  • Open up the loop so that seam is in the middle (pretty sides of the fabric should still be facing each other) and finger press the seam open.

3. Create The Burrito

  • Take only the top layer of fabric and fold one half into the middle.

  • Repeat this with the opposite side.

  • Fold the bottom layer of fabric over so that the pretty sides are facing and the raw edges align - you have now enclosed that original top layer.

  • Clip or pin to hold it in place.

4. Sewing The Burrito

  • Using a regular straight stitch and a 1/4” seam allowance, start sewing straight along that raw edge - don’t forget to backstitch.

  • Make sure you are only sewing the two layers of fabric and not the fabric that is folded inside.
  • When you get close to the end of that section - stop sewing, make sure the needle is in the fabric and carefully pull out some of that inside layer. You will need to use your other hand to hold onto the top layer at the back to stop the fabric from bunching up.

  • Once you have pulled as much of that inner fabric through as possible, straighten the fabric, re-align those raw edges and continue to sew.

  • Repeat this until you get close to your beginning stitches.
  • Stop approximately 1.5”-2” from your starting stitches (this will be the opening we use to turn the scrunchie right side out) backstitch to end.

5. Turn The Scrunchie Right Side Out

  • Reach into the opening we left un-sewn and carefully pull out that inner layer of fabric.

6. Adding The Elastic

  • Using either a saftey pin or a bodkin (I use a bodkin) thread the elastic through the opening.

  • Add a clip to the other end of the elastic so it doesn’t pull all the way through.

  • Once the elastic is threaded, overlap the ends about 1/4” and clip together.
  • Using a zig zag stitch sew the elastic together - if you’d prefer, you can tie your elastic into a knot.

7. Final Steps

  • Push the elastic into the scrunchie.

  • Fold the seam of the opening in around 1/4” each side.
  • If you’d like to add your own personalised tag I recommend adding it here.

  • Using a regular straight stitch, sew as close as you can to the edge to sew that opening closed. Backstitch at the beginning and the end.

  • Cut away any loose threads and move the fabric evenly around the elastic and then your scrunchie is complete!
